What's With That?

The Give Books for Christmas Giveaway Hop is still going on.
Click here to remember the details.

Have you seen this article in the Huffington Post about Amazon's new Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP)? It's been getting a lot of talk among folks in my writing organizations.

The implications are huge.Whether you've ever considered self-publishing or not, this is something to watch.

Is this a good thing for publishing? What do you think?

  1. After researching this, I have decided to enroll in the KDP Select program when my book is published. Amazon gives a lot of incentive and support to Independent authors, as opposed to other retailers who really don't. For this reason, I'm excited to try this, and always look forward to Amazon's forward thinking.

  2. Yeah I saw this a while back, it does seem like a good approach. It could really help a lot too.

  3. I think it's a little scary. I want everyone to access my books, not just Kindle owners. I'm glad my publisher has my book in the iBookstore (especially as I have an iPad) and on Barnes & Noble's Nook, as they do sell a lot of my books.

  4. I agree with Alex. I'm a bit scared by it. Smaller sellers will suffer. I understand how it might be good to start out on there, but for those authors already out on the market, it isn't a good deal.

  5. No, no, no. I'm not in favor of anything that limits where an author can sell their book or in helping to create a monopoly for Amazon. :(

  7. I'm with Leigh, but I don't like the idea of rights being taken away...

  8. Need to do more research but, it's just another situation where too many people are chasing the same dollar. Limitations and this type of exclusivity CANNOT be good. There not called AMAZON for nothing. Definitely something to be very careful of.

  10. This seems like I breaks anti-trust laws. If only I knew a lawyer...I know lets ask Robin.

  11. Hmm, That seems a little scary. I agree with Angela; it seems like this company is getting a little big for its britches.

  12. Ditto to L.G.'s comment.
And it's a lot scary. With the demise of brick and mortar stores, and the rise of Amazon's dominance in general already, it's not a good idea to encourage "bad behavior." We indie authors should band together and ignore this move. Power to the people!
