The Secret Life of Daydreams by Lucinda Whitney

Sometimes the dream you never planned for is the one you can't live without.

Six years after a painful divorce, Josh Conrad is happy traveling the world as a photographer. When he arrives in Portugal, he plans to complete the assignment as quickly as possible. What he doesn't plan for is Sofia, the girl he baptized eleven years earlier on an LDS mission, and soon he's making excuses to prolong his trip.

Sofia Monteiro leads a structured life in Braga, Portugal, teaching high school by day and caring for her mother by night. After she reconnects with Josh through mutual friends, the memory of a failed relationship and her new graduate program are enough reasons to stay away from him.

As they collaborate on a project, Josh is wary of repeating his old mistakes and Sofia hesitates to spend time with an American who's only passing through.

Can two people with wounded hearts bring themselves to trust their dreams to each other?

Hello Again by Heather Tullis

I'm a big fan of Heather Tullis's DiCarlo Brides series with its yummy combination of family relations, suspense, and romance. I'm looking forward to when this new series is available on audiobook. In the meantime ...

Piper Daniels has one wish—to keep her little brother out of trouble—but her work schedule and a lack of activities for teens in her neighborhood complicate that mission. When she latches onto the idea of starting a community garden, it seems to answer all of her requirements. Until she realizes who owns the property she wants to use.

Reece Stone was the love of her life ten years earlier, until he left with only a phone call goodbye and no explanation. Now he’s the head of Stone Enterprises, and he’s thrilled at the chance to make amends and spend time with the woman he’s never been able to forget. He knows they can find love again, if he can melt her anger enough to give him a chance.

Danyelle Ferguson - Author Interview and Spotlight

My special guest today is the charming Danyelle Ferguson. We're both member of a writing group called Authors Incognito. She's got a new book out, Sweet Confections, but I have some questions for Danyelle first.

1. You were just given a yacht. What would you name it?

The Sea Sick Princess   (boats and I just don't get along)

Dang, I guess you won't be going with me and hubby on our next cruise, huh?

2. Who is your favorite secondary character in Sweet Confections?

I actually have two. Chloe - who is Graydon's speed-demon talking/texting cousin. She just makes me laugh, laugh, laugh. The second is Rachel's nephew Stockton. He has autism and is based on my son at that age. Stockton just makes me want to go back in time and snuggle my little guy some more.

I love when secondary characters have depth. I think it adds to the entire story, makes me want to read more.

3. What's you're favorite movie line?

"Brinkley! Here, Brinkley!"  (and your toes curl as you wait for Tom Hanks to come around the corner)

Such a fun movie!

4. Chocolate: milk or dark?

Absolutely milk chocolate!

You and I could split some bridge mix and both come away happy. :D

5. What project are you working on now?

I'm working on book two of the Indulgence Row series - Love Under Construction. This is Charlee's story as she breaks away from the construction company she's worked for since her teen years and goes out on her own to rehab the Indulgence Row houses into a charming shopping district. What Charlee doesn't know is that Peter (the boss's son) has had a long-time crush on her - and now that they are no longer co-workers, the way is free for him to pursue her . . . except for the many mishaps and bumps along the way.

I love the sound of these. I'm a girl who really enjoys SciFi and epic fantasy but I love me some good romances too. Congrats on the release of Sweet Confections!

According to Rachel Marconi chocolate heals all wounds. That and throwing darts at pictures of her ex-boyfriend. Burned by yet another bad relationship, Rachel decides to reprioritize her life, putting her dream to compete on a Food Network Challenge on the top of her list and dating at the bottom crossed out in red sharpie. But what's a girl to do when a certain sexy guy keeps asking her out?

Cue in Graydon Green, a former pro hockey player turned restaurant owner. After a lot of persistent and humorous teasing, he finally convinces Rachel to commit to a date. Just when things begin to warm up, threatening notes directed at Rachel arrive. When her bakery is vandalized, Graydon's protective streak goes on red alert. Is it her obsessive ex-boyfriend stalking her? Or maybe a challenger trying to sabotage the competition?

Either way, Rachel is definitely going to need more chocolate - perhaps drizzled over ice cream and devil's food cake.

Also available on Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and iBookstore.

The Summer I Found You by Jolene Perry

I've got a special guest today, author Jolene Perry. She's going to talk about her new book, The Summer I Found You

Kate's dream boyfriend has just broken up with her and she's still reeling from her diagnosis of type 1 diabetes.

Aidan planned on being a lifer in the army and went to Afghanistan straight out of high school. Now he's a disabled young veteran struggling to embrace his new life.

When Kate and Aidan find each other neither one wants to get attached. But could they be right for each other after all

AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE | GOODREADS

Take it away, Jolene.

Writing from a personal place:

Aidan -
I started writing The Summer I Found You after reading a news article about these incredibly young war veterans coming home without arms or legs or who were otherwise scarred. My husband served in the Army, and I get teary every time I read a military story.
I wanted to write one.

But when you're writing one character with such a big backstory, I felt like it was going to be tricky to pair that with someone who would understand him.

Kate -
I'm named after a grandma (my middle name - Betty) who died before I was born. She had Type 1 Diabetes. I grew up with stories about her giving herself shots and being so careful about what she ate. For a long time I'd wanted to write about someone like this as a way to maybe feel a little closer to her, or to understand her in some way. I did a LOT of research on this and talked to every friend I knew who was diabetic to make sure I got it all right.

I almost didn't finish this book -
I'd already hollowed myself out learning about how many adults and kids and teens have to be so careful about something I did everyday without thinking - eating. And then I was attempting to tackle writing a guy who'd lost not just his arm, but the career he'd geared himself up for all through high school.

It all changed -
When I talked to a writer friend (Type 1 diabetic) who said she wished there had been books with people who faced the things she had in high school. And then it changed again when I read story after story on the Wounded Warriors homepage about how these men and women had come home with their prosthetics, not slowing down a bit, tears streaming down my face for most of it.

So yes.
This book comes from a very real, sometimes harsh place for me. But in the end, my hope is that what will make the difference between writing characters who are neat and writing ones that stick with you.

Hopefully I've done the latter ;-)

Thanks so much for letting me take over today!!

When Chase sees Clare during her brief Christmas visit to their hometown, he knows it's his chance to make things right between them. Considering he all but ignored her while on his mission, it's a tough task.
After having her heart broken by him before, Clare is wary of a holiday romance. But a long-awaited goodnight kiss might change her mind.

Blue Sky by Melissa Lemon

WHAT IT'S ABOUT:
Sunny is bereaving the sudden death of her parents. Lewis is a homeless runaway seeking shelter in Sunny's basement from an early winter storm. When they unexpectedly meet, Sunny wants nothing more than to kill him. After a bizarre hostage situation and a poker game, Sunny realizes that Lewis isn't out to hurt her. Their initial distaste turns to friendship and love, but Sunny isn't keen on starting a relationship with a man she knows so little about. Lewis is loyal, and his patience paramount. Sunny is hesitant but her love runs deep and true. They are separated unwillingly, and must struggle and face overwhelming odds to find each other again.

MY TAKE:
I really liked Lewis. I kept wondering when we'd find out what would drive a young man like him from home and to the streets. My heart went out to him when I finally found out. The issue of being homeless in the winter is brought very much to life.

It made me even more irritated with Sunny for her hot and cold treatment of him. While her erratic behavior--considering what she'd just been through and what an emotional mess she was--could be excused somewhat, it still totally messed with poor Lewis's head. Her behavior was also consistent with the way I see real girls treat real guys all the time, cluelessly sending mixed signals.

I thought Lewis's brother Jack was hilarious. I would love to see Melissa write another novel that takes on his story.

Melissa has had many imaginary friends (and enemies) since she was a child. Her vivid imagination had her writing stories and jotting down book ideas for years until she finally sat down and finished a novel. She is married to an awesome man and the proud mother of three children. Music is also an important part of her life and she shares time with her music students teaching them piano, cello or guitar. Melissa is a graduate of the University of Utah and currently resides in the Salt Lake area.

Ebook Giveaway - "The Most Important Catch" by Jaclyn M. Hawkes

Book Description:
Run or die!

She knew too much, and she'd seen too much.

And the police refused to help.

Knowing that she was to be the next scheduled death, Kelly Campbell hid under head to toe black leather and a tinted motorcycle helmet and ran for her life. When the weather turned cold, she turned south. She ended up in North Carolina, home to one of the most famed and eligible NFL football stars in the whole league; only she didn't know that. She thought he was a businessman. Not being a huge fan, all she knew was that he was incredibly attractive, kind, generous, and that she was safe with him.

Or was she? His brand of fame proved to be all but deadly, but his fame wasn't nearly as lethal as his attraction. He kept her safe and protected. All except for her heart.

This book is definitely targeted for the LDS market, so there are religious references. If they don't bother you, I think you'll enjoy it.

I loved the development of the two characters, Kelly and Robby, as they got to know each other. My favorite parts were the scenes where they just worked together fixing up his house and learned to care for each other. I loved how comfortable they were together and how comfortable that made me feel. Their similar senses of humor made me smile, and I felt like I would like to know both of them--even if they were both gorgeous. Hawkes kept giving me enough references to how much Kelly missed her family so it was believable and the snippets about the bad guys still hunting her maintained the suspense.

There's a point where my heart just broke for both Kelly and Robby. We're told as writers to hurt our characters and then hurt them some more. And then some more. If you want them to have a happily ever after, they're going to have to earn it.

I've read three of Hawkes' books now, and each one gets better than the last.

So, I'm going to be giving away an ebook copy. It's simple and painless. All you have to do is (1) note in the comment section that you're interested; and (2) include your email address.  I'll let random.org choose the winner first thing on Friday morning.

Book Review - Queen in Exile . . . Plus Awards & Querying

I've got a guest blogger today. Her name is Bobbie Staley, and she's one of my clerks at my day job. She's not an author or an aspiring author. She's one of those people we're all hoping to bring into our camps

She's a Reader.

All right. So am I. So are you. But you know what I mean.

She's highlighting Queen in Exile by Donna Hatch.

Isn't this a great cover?
Book Description:
Rumors of War hang over Princess Jeniah's peaceful country of Arden, a land that shuns both magic and warfare. Following a lifelong dream, Jeniah forms a telepahtic bond with a revered creature called a chayim, who is prophesied to save her kingdom. But when a Darborian knight comes upon Jeniah with her chayim, he sees only a vicious monster about to devour a maiden, and he slays the beast.

Devastated by the loss of her chayim, and fearing that her own magic is evil, Jeniah doubts her destiny. When an enemy invades Arden City, they slaughter the people, storm the castle, and execute the entire royal family except the princess. Rescued by the knight who slew her chayim, Jeniah is now heir to the throne of Arden and the only hope for freeing her people from tyranny.

On the run and hunted by enemy soldiers, Jeniah must place her life and the fate of her kingdom in the hands of this trained killer. Torn between embracing her destiny as queen af Arden, and her love for a mere knight, she must ultimately rely on her magic to save herself and her people from death and tyranny.

What does Bobbie think?

As I began to read yet another book about magic I was skeptical since I have read a few lately.  I was pleasantly surprised to find this one caught my  attention right away with the bond that Jeniah has with her Sacred animal.

I was taken with the tale of trials and love and anger and tears and oh-my-gosh moments that kept me wanting to read till the weee hours of the night.  I love this book, and I would recommend it to all ages.  I am going to have my 13-year-old read it because I know she would love this book.

Awards

I want to acknowledge the kind ladies who gave me a couple of awards this week:
You can check out the charmers here.

Querying

I hope you all had a great weekend. On Saturday I clicked the "send" button for the second time. It was harder in some ways because this one was unsolicited. I'm surprisingly calm about everything.

Hubby and I are going to go out to dinner every time I hit 10 rejections. I got my inspiration from author James Dashner as he mentioned in LTUE last year that that's what he did. The hard part will be those unofficial rejections because the agency has a "no reply" policy. You just tick off the time, and when you haven't heard anything just assume it's a "not interested".

*Rubs hands together*

Where shall we go out to eat?

Book Giveaway! "Not My Type" by Melanie Jacobson

It's not too late to get in on the
Banned Book Giveaway Hop here

Not My Type Book Giveaway

Those of you who have followed me for a bit know that last May I went to the Storymaker writing conference and also signed up for Bootcamp. Well, my bookcamp Drill Instructor was the charming Melanie Jacobson, author of The List and the recently released Not My Type.

I'm reading Not My Type right now and thoroughly enjoying it. Because I was in the middle of another book, I lent this one to a coworker to read first. She loved it! This coworker seems to get to read all my books before I do. Ugh!

Well, to help celebrate the release of Melanie's new book, I'm hosting a giveaway. Some lucky person is going to win a copy of Not My Type. So what's it about? Here's what the back of the book says:
Twenty-three-year-old Pepper Spicer is not living the dream. She ended her engagement at the last minute because fiance—a musician an soon-to-be reality TV star—wanted her to sacrifice her own career ambitions for his. Now she's stuck at home sharing a room with her little sister, trying to pay off massive debt for a wedding that didn't happen, and spending Friday nights Facebook-stalking everyone who has a better life. Her therapist father urges her to choose her career dreams and count her blessings by writing weekly thank-you notes, but gratitude is a tall order when she botches an important job interview and has to settle for writing an undercover dating web-zine column—the last thing in the world she wants to do. Still, as Pepper (byline:Indie Girl) chronicles her bizarre and hilarious blind dates, she gives her father's challenge a try and slowly finds herself leaving self-pity behind. Life takes a major upswing as Pepper's column hits the big time and she tastes the exhilarating thrill of success. But there's one tiny problem: the intensely hot man she's falling for is having issues with her job (again). Will Pepper trade her personal ambition for another chance at love?
And if you're still not sure you want this book (and I'm tellin' you, you want this book), you can read the first chapter here.

Now that you've whetted your appetite with that little appetizer of a chapter, I bet you're wondering what you have to do to win the book.

Well ...

This is what you MUST do:
  • Comment here that you're interested in being entered in the drawing
  • Since some of this romance also has to do with Pepper's job/career, share a job that you've had some time in your life
This is what you CAN do if you so choose:
  • Follow me if you aren't already doing so
  • Follow Melanie here
This is going to be a short contest,
and I will announce the winner on my post
on Friday morning.

And don't forget to check out The List:
Ashley Barrett doesn’t want to get married. At least, not anytime soon. She doesn’t care how many of her friends and family members and fellow churchgoers had weddings before they finished college — the last thing she needs in her fun-loving twenties is the dead-weight of some guy. And that’s why she created The List. By the time she completes all twenty-five goals — from learning a language to skydiving to perfecting the art of making sushi — she’ll be more ready to settle down. Maybe.
This summer in California is a prime time for Ashley to cross two items off the list: learn to surf (#13) and have a summer romance (#17). And Matt Gibson, the best surf instructor in Huntington Beach and the most wanted guy in the singles ward, is the perfect man for the job. Ashley hatches a plan to love him and leave him before heading off to grad school in the fall (#4, get a master’s degree). But when Matt decides he doesn’t like the “leaving” part, Ashley’s carefully laid plans are turned sideways. Now Ashley faces an unexpected dilemma: should she stick to the safety of The List, or risk everything for a love that may tie her down — or might set her free?
Since I'm asking  you to tell about a job you had, I'll lead out. One of the jobs I had in college was folding T-shirts. Well, shorts, too, since it was the laundry for the university gym, but there wasn't anything to folding shorts. Have you dropped dead from boredom, yet? It was so badwe'd have contests to see how many t-shirts we could fold in an hour. O_o

It's amazing the things people would leave with their gym clothes. I mean, come on. I realize a guy might not notice when he left his jock strap behind, but a girl's panties or bra? We used to have fun with those and slip them into the neatly folded clothes of members of the opposite sex. Bear in mind that I attended a conservative religious university *coughBYUcough*. We tend to be a little tight about stuff like that, especially back before there was dirt.

What can I say?

So, what dumb job have you had?

The Reader's Imagination

For not having written anything on WIP #1 since June 30th, I think I've made some great progress. I've received  three full-novel critiques back and, while it needs work, the results have been very positive and encouraging. In fact, I was so elated yesterday at work that I had a hard time concentrating on the matter at hand--getting ready for the candidate orientation. I'm well into the municipal election season, and things are getting crazy at work. Not a time to make mistakes because I'm distracted; those kinds of mistakes can get me sued. *sigh*

But an issue I've been trying to deal with in my tale (and is something others have raised as an issue) comes down to how much I should leave to the reader's imagination. I've mentioned before that I suck at description. I'm learning, and I think I'm getting (a little) better, but it will never be my strong point. It's hard to describe something that your mind's eye doesn't really look at.

How to explain it better. My stepmother was wonderful at creating silk and dried flower arrangements. She could just grab a little of this and a little of that and in minutes have this beautiful creation. I realized I had a problem the first time I went to a flower display, walked around looking at different kinds of flowers for nearly an hour, and then left the store empty handed. The lovely creations that popped in my stepmother's mind were on vacation in mine.

Or maybe retirement, since they still don't show up for me.

I like to leave some things to the imagination of the reader. I will describe my characters somewhat, but I don't want to say too much. I like the reader to be able to fill in the blanks, so to speak. I read somewhere that one of the reasons the Bella character in the Twilight series is so popular is because it's possible for the young girls reading the book to superimpose themselves on her, to be Bella. I'm completely good with that. I just don't know if I'm good AT it.

I'm struggling right now with how much description to put into the physical, romantic elements in the story. I don't want my story to be a substitute for an aphrodisiac--unless it's the readers' own internal thoughts that are taking them there. If the readers prefer an image of a more chaste relationship, I want them to have that option as well. I just hope the creative juices for this aren't on vacation, when I start working on it in August.

How do you approach your description? Do you prefer more or less?

Blogfest - Just Kiss Already

How did it happen that their lips came together?
How does it happen that birds sing, that snow melts,
that the rose unfolds, that the dawn whitens behind the stark shapes of trees
on the quivering summit of the hill?
A kiss, and all was said.
~Victor Hugo

I have succumbed to the magic that's filling the air (and the blogosphere). I hadn't given it much thought because hubby and I will be flying back home on the evening of February 14th after nearly 3 weeks in Hawaii for the arrival of a new granddaughter.

I've signed up for the Just Kiss Already Blogfest being hosted by Stina Lindenblatt and Christina Lee. Following is a 250 word excerpt from A Change of Plans, my WIP #1.

Shocked at his unexpected nearness, I started and then staggered, when the ship rolled. As I lost my balance, he seized me around the waist and pulled me close to steady me. I believe it was all the stress I’d been under combined with the surprise of suddenly being in his arms. I lost my head and said the first thing that came to my mind, something I hadn’t even admitted to myself.
“You are so hot,” I murmured.
His eyes opened wide, and my jaw dropped as I realized I’d said it aloud.
“I didn’t say that!” I exclaimed frantically, pulling away from him.
“Oh, no you don’t!” He said as he grabbed me back again. “You can’t say something like that and then just walk away.” He kissed me. It wasn’t forceful or pushy, but rather gentle and tentative.
There was now a war raging inside me. Ms Practical shrieked at me to run, to get away. Miss Romantic shouted that I should put my arms around him and kiss him and touch those incredible shoulders and arms. I was frozen with indecision.
When I didn’t pull away, he kissed me again with more confidence.
My heart was now beating so wildly that I wondered if I was in the throes of a panic attack. I felt like someone had linked me to an outlet that was sending electricity through the marrow of my bones. My fingers and toes tingled. I needed air...

"Buzz of Love" & Literary Couples

My friend Natalie Palmer is having a Valentines Day contest here about her book "Second Kiss", which is a YA romance. You ought to check it out--both her contest and the book.

****
And speaking about Valentines Day and romance and young adults, it made me think about some of my favorite and not-so-favorite literary couples.

I'll start with the less happy couples
  1. Andrew "Ender" Wiggins and Novinha (I absolutely loath this toxic relationship. Ender deserved so much better) from Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind.
  2. Catherine and Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights
  3. Jacob and Renesme from Breaking Dawn (sorry, but that's just creepy even if it's innocent)
Couples I like:
  1. Jane and Rochester in Jane Eyre
  2. Anne and Gilbert in Anne of Green Gables
  3. Lucy and Nicholas in Moonrakers Bride
These are a few of mine. What are your's?
