Guest Post - Elizabeth Seckman

During this ‘trying to get published adventure’ I spent quite a bit of time cheering on and being cheered on by other writer friends ( and of course by my husband, who I must add has recently asked to be included in the edit process and I am now imagining all the poignant places he’ll want to add some fight/sex  scenes and  spandex bikini wardrobe changes…but that’s a topic for another time…)

For today, as I closed an email from a friend who offered up all the love and support a wavering wannabe could ask for, I decided it was only right to give back. So this is a post for the aspiring writers.  

Now, I know not everybody in the world wants to get a book published, but for the half of the world that does, here's a thought...

Getting an agent or an editor is like dating. You shower and dress pretty for each date. But not every date ends in a score. Sure, some have more luck than others and their every date becomes a sure thing, but they are the exception, not the rule.

For the rest of us? Plan to put your party shoes on and dance till your feet blister and you think your shoes just might wear out...then you may be getting close to that magical moment when the stars align and love strikes.

What to do until then?

1. Enjoy each date. There's something to learn from each one...even the toughest 'don’t call me’s, I’ll call  you’s' teach you something.
2. Respect your date. Just because they didn't show the love doesn't make them an idiot. Follow up hate mail will only flag you as the idiot that you are.
3. Don't make every date a blind date. Find out a little something before you ask them out. Do they share the same  interests? Like the same kind of books? Why waste your time and sensitivities on people who aren't even your type?
4. Find a writer buddy. You'll need a shoulder to cry on, preferably one who understands that a 'personal rejection' is something to be brag about.  (And who can be trusted better than a friend to let you know you have spinach in your teeth before you head out of the house?)
5. Always remember, your first love is rarely your true love. Keep creating while you’re planning other dates~you don't have the luxury of wallowing in the past or in a single work.

I know you've heard it all before but I’ll bore you with it again…

If at first you don’t succeed, then write, write again.

Cause as long as the band is playing....then we shall dance!

Spotlight - Hawke's Nest by Darcy Flynn

First off, let me say that I love the name Darcy, and I've felt that way long before I'd ever heard of Pride and Prejudice. My kid sister bears it, and I gave a variation of it to one of my characters in my Safe Harbors series (D'Arcy).

The Princess and the Prom by Jaclyn Weist

I'm currently reading this book and enjoying it. The author has done a good job of capturing the high school environment. It's reminiscent of a duology that I wrote for my oldest granddaughter where there's a switching of characters, but mine isn't a twist on an actual fairy tale which this book is. I love that aspect of the story and how it impacts the princess. How would you feel if you woke in the future and found out you were part of a cursed fairy tale?

And our modern-day heroine, waking to find some stranger kissing her? Jenny's got some fun spunk. I love a book with quotables.

"Seriously? You think this whining is supposed to impress me?"

Danyelle Ferguson - Author Interview and Spotlight

My special guest today is the charming Danyelle Ferguson. We're both member of a writing group called Authors Incognito. She's got a new book out, Sweet Confections, but I have some questions for Danyelle first.

1. You were just given a yacht. What would you name it?

The Sea Sick Princess   (boats and I just don't get along)

Dang, I guess you won't be going with me and hubby on our next cruise, huh?

2. Who is your favorite secondary character in Sweet Confections?

I actually have two. Chloe - who is Graydon's speed-demon talking/texting cousin. She just makes me laugh, laugh, laugh. The second is Rachel's nephew Stockton. He has autism and is based on my son at that age. Stockton just makes me want to go back in time and snuggle my little guy some more.

I love when secondary characters have depth. I think it adds to the entire story, makes me want to read more.

3. What's you're favorite movie line?

"Brinkley! Here, Brinkley!"  (and your toes curl as you wait for Tom Hanks to come around the corner)

Such a fun movie!

4. Chocolate: milk or dark?

Absolutely milk chocolate!

You and I could split some bridge mix and both come away happy. :D

5. What project are you working on now?

I'm working on book two of the Indulgence Row series - Love Under Construction. This is Charlee's story as she breaks away from the construction company she's worked for since her teen years and goes out on her own to rehab the Indulgence Row houses into a charming shopping district. What Charlee doesn't know is that Peter (the boss's son) has had a long-time crush on her - and now that they are no longer co-workers, the way is free for him to pursue her . . . except for the many mishaps and bumps along the way.

I love the sound of these. I'm a girl who really enjoys SciFi and epic fantasy but I love me some good romances too. Congrats on the release of Sweet Confections! 

According to Rachel Marconi chocolate heals all wounds. That and throwing darts at pictures of her ex-boyfriend. Burned by yet another bad relationship, Rachel decides to reprioritize her life, putting her dream to compete on a Food Network Challenge on the top of her list and dating at the bottom crossed out in red sharpie. But what's a girl to do when a certain sexy guy keeps asking her out?

Cue in Graydon Green, a former pro hockey player turned restaurant owner. After a lot of persistent and humorous teasing, he finally convinces Rachel to commit to a date. Kelly Nelson was raised in Utah and now resides in the heart of the beautiful Pacific Northwest. She enjoys life on a ten-acre horse property with her husband, four children, and of course lots of horses. Kelly has a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University and worked as a CPA for several years before opting to stay home and raise a family. As a young girl she was an avid reader and had a passion for creative writing. Her travels to England, France, Egypt, Israel, West Indies, Mexico and across the United States sparked a love of history, adventure and exotic places. This led to the inspiration behind her debut novel, The Keeper's Calling, Book 1 in The Keeper's Saga.
