What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?
I can't really remember a specific experience. I've been a reader since I was young and used to hide away in my bedroom reading. I remember making the walk along the levee near our home to the local library to borrow books. My father was transferred to the Philippines when I was going into the 6th grade, and the library (and the swimming pool right next door) was one of the first places I searched for.
What about you?
What are some of your early experiences with words?
Library and a pool - double bonus!
ReplyDeleteOooh, it must have been fun spending part of the childhood in an exotic country!
ReplyDeleteMostly it was a very poor country. There seemed to be a very small minority of very rich people and then a huge poor class with a small middle class.
DeleteI was an early reader too.
ReplyDeleteLibrary and a pool? Young me would have never gone home.
ReplyDeleteYeah. Exactly!
DeleteTwo for one indeed.
ReplyDeleteI had to wait to enter first grade to learn to read, so when my kids hit kindergarten they were site reading words. I've always over prepared my kids way too much. That's another story.
ReplyDeleteTeresa
But there's nothing wrong with that!
DeleteOne of my earliest memories of LOVING a book is when I discovered Charlotte's Web. I remember being sooo excited about books by E.B. White, Beverly Cleary, Judy Blume, and others. And picture books! I loved Harry the Dirty Dog, The Monster at the End of This Book, and again, tons of other books. Fun question!
ReplyDeleteYES! I was a huge fan of Charlotte's Web. When we moved to the Philippines, my teacher wrote in a memory book a friend created with thoughts from different people at school that the teacher would never forget how many times I read that book. :)
