Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!
Short and sweet on my end. I know this is A to Z month, so I'm just going to share author Beth Revis's brilliant post about handling negative reviews.
I like short. I like sweet. I like reviews. =) There will be haters, eh? Here's to filling the web with enough positive vibes to counteract that negativity!
Because reading is such a subjective experience, I cannot assume that because I don't like a book that no one else will. I just review the ones I like. There are plenty of other people who don't mind trashing a book.
Her post was pretty funny:) I'm weary of reviews, specifcally leaving reviews. I've had several authors get mad at me for not leaving stunning reviews. Not bad reviews, just not stunning reviews...go figure.
Negative reviews can be informative, if the author cuts the ego off their chip. Some are just mean and attacking though. I try to write honest, conscientuos reviews. I don't set out to hurt an author, but won't cater toa self pleasing attitude either.
Negative reviews usually don't mean too much us the reviewers explains why they didn't like something. And most of the time it's all about the fact that they don't like that kind of book, and never would have, no matter how well the author writes.
Yes! And one of the reasons I would never want to have a huge hit like Stephenie Meyer. People would read it who would never have picked it up in the first place. And, of course they would hate it. No thanks.
Real negative reviews don't bother me. Honest opinions don't bother me. The thing that bothers me are the 1 and 2 star review with no reason given, the "reviewer" version of trolls.
Negative reviews - know they will happen and just let them slide off your back.
ReplyDeleteI agree, and I love Beth's philosophical approach. Humorous and spot on.
DeleteHa! There's no WAY people can hate bacon. They ARE weird.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder today. Negative reviews are always tough to swallow.

If they hate my book, I doubt they were my target audience anyway.
DeleteThey don't bother me, can't please everyone
ReplyDeleteThat's the attitude!
DeleteSometimes one can glean something helpful from a bad review.
ReplyDeleteYes you can. Or you can just use it as an excuse to beat yourself up. I don't need anyone egging me on. :D

ReplyDeleteEvery author will get negative reviews. Just don't let any of them stop you from writing.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I don't read them. My son-in-law does and thinks it's funny when people get mad because my book's a clean romance.
DeleteWe can really not please everyone. And we do have to give an honest opinion.
ReplyDeleteWell, as my father was always fond of saying: Opinions are like people's rear ends. Everyone's got one, and they usually stink. ;)
DeleteBeth's post makes a lot of sense and puts things into perspective.
ReplyDeleteAnd perspective is everything.
DeleteOooh, thanks. I'll check out her post.
ReplyDeleteYou won't be sorry, Julie.
DeleteBeth is so talented--off to read her post now...
ReplyDeleteShe's got a great sense of humor!

ReplyDeleteI try to be honest too. If I've got an issue with a book, though, I'm more likely to email the author and speak of my concerns in a less public venue.

DeleteThat link is perfect. My thoughts on negative reviews exactly. :)
ReplyDeleteI wish I could be funny like Beth.

ReplyDeleteExactly! I've got two 1-star reviews for Second Chances 101, one of them before I'd even written the book.
