Veterans Day

On a serious note:

I offer my thanks to the men and women (and their families who support them) who stand or have stood between us and those would relieve us of our freedoms. I'm an Army Veteran, and I come from a family of Veterans. Here's a link to my post from Memorial Day this year.

How about you? Have you served or do you have family members or friends who do/have? What branches did they serve in?

For fun, how far do they go back? My great great grandfather fought on the side of the South during the recent troubles or the war of northern aggression. My northern relatives might think them's fightin' words ...

  2. Thanks for the nice reminder. Many who have served in my family as well, but not quite like yours.

On the Minton side of the family, I have a twice great grandfather who fought for the South in the Civil War.

Also a grandfather many more times removed who was a Revolutionary War Pensioner.

Daddy and my Father-in-law, WWII veterans. Thinking of them especially today. And always Michael who served in Korea and Bosnia.

  5. Since you're a veteran, let me start off by saying, "Thank you."

I'm not a vet, but my hubby and brother both served in Nam, and my father and a whole slew of uncles served in WWII. It's good to see how many bloggers wrote about veterans today.

  6. Great post. The only person I know that fought in a war was my dad's dad. He fought in world war II.

But even though I don't know anyone currently fighting, I am very thankful for all those who do/did.

  8. I was walking this morning with my 10 year old and we saw boy scouts sticking flags on the lawns in our neighborhood. I asked him if he knew why they we bringing out the flags and he said, "Yes, it's veterinarians day."

  11. Never served myself, and both my parents were children in WWII and were evacuated from their homes. My grandfather lived out the war on a German-occupied island where he did things, like hide crystal radio sets, that could have got him shot. My wife's grandfather was a commando and took part in raids behind the lines. He was too upset by what he saw to ever talk about it.

  13. First, hope you're having a great Veterans' Day! :)

To answer your question. Unfortunately I can only trace back to WWII at this time. But here's what I know.

My father and his brother were in the Navy in between Korea and Vietnam.

My maternal grandfather and his future brother-in-laws (my maternal grandmother's brothers) were in the Navy during WWII. My grandfather was attached to the USS Lexington, currently located in Corpus Christi. I toured the ship and couldn't imagine him living on (in?) that steel coffin.

My father-in-law and three of his four brothers served in the Army in Viet-Nam.

And for 2 1/2 years I was the wife of a Naval Petty Officer. I have a healthy respect for the sacrifices made by those who either chose to enlist or were drafted into the military.

To all the other Veterans out there, thank you.

Hope you're having a great Veteran's Day. My husband served for five years and he was a sergeant in the army.
