#Poetry Summer and an Award

I totally stole this from Sarah Eden. She was kind enough to suggest it when I cried for help on Twitter, since I'm old and need short things to memorize. By the way, I can't wait for her book Seeking Persephone to come out in September. It's a prequel to Courting Miss Lancaster, and I've already fallen in love with the characters.

Here's the poem I'm memorizing this week.

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.
~~Emily Dickinson

Hey, Robin. I didn't even realize until now that you're mentioned in this poem. Are you a fainter? You seemed sturdier than that.

BLOG AWARD

I've also been honored with another awarding of The Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award by Kimberly Krey. You should check out her blog. I must be really sweet, because this is the third time I've been given this particular award. Thanks, Kimberly.

Feel free to stop reading (like you're not free to anyway) if you're tired of reading random things about me.

Rules of the The Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award (some rules varied but these were the most popular):
1. Copy and paste the award to your blog.
Check

2. Thank and link to the person(s) who nominated you.
Check

3. Share seven random facts about yourself.
One
I hate the sensation of falling--that feeling of your stomach being higher up than the rest of your body. The kind you get when you're, you know, falling. I'm not afraid of heights. On roller coasters I'm fine going upside down and doing the corkscrew turns. Just not the falling.

When my family went on vacation to Disneyland a few years ago and we spent four days park hopping, one of my family's favorite rides was California Screamer. My daughter assured me it was not bad at all. I went.

As we got off, she said, "See, there were only one or two times when there's that sensation."

Um. No. Try five. I counted them.

Tower of Terror anybody? Why don't you just shoot me?

Two
I have an associate degree from Brigham Young University in University Studies with a focus on genealogy (they didn't have a major).

Three
The only bones I've ever broken are a toe and my tail bone (twice).

Four
I'm a serious Harry Potter geek. And proud of it. You can find me at the Leaky Lounge where I'm a moderator. As of last night I have 12,878 posts. I think I'll have to retire when I hit 13,000. =D

Five
My favorite color is green. Just about any shade, though after wearing olive drab everything for a couple of years I was a little off that shade of green for a few decades. When I got to my permanent duty assignment in Nurnberg, even my dang bedroom walls were painted OD. Ugh.

Six
Dark Chocolate. I like the other versions, but if I have a choice, dark chocolate wins every time. The darker, the better.

Seven
When I was a little girl, I was in love with musicals. I would sit in my classroom at school, just waiting for my teacher to break out in song and dance. Such a disappointment.

This video is totally the stuff of my dreams. How come I'm never in a place where they do this? Life's not fair.

4th rule: Pass the award along to 5 deserving blogging buddies.
Jordan McCollum  (Jordan's got choice writing info and is tekkie resource as well)
James Duckett (the writer, not the guy on death row)
Deanna Barnhart (a fellow member of my critique group and host of July's Gearin' up to Get An Agent Blog O Rama)
Amber over at Litpool (she's counting down until Harry' Birthday with HP trivia and prizes)
Candace's Book Blog (I LOVE her blog background)

  7. You are a great sport to accept the award for a THIRD time! I'm such a procrastinator I got to throw five into one! By the way - thank for sharing that amazing video. It was so beautiful it actually made me bawl (I'm a total baby). I too would love to witness one of those myself.

  8. L.G. - thanks for continuing to read.

Deana - I am. I've learned how fortunate I am to live in a place with such a thriving writing community.

Bree - I knew you had good taste! =D Your books will be in the mail today.

Jordan - I love your blog. It's such a great resource.

Jess and Colene - yes, twice. The first one was quite a violent break (my youngest son crashed into me while roller skating), but the last one that happened two years ago came without any knowledge of what I'd done. Miserable.

Kimberly - thanks again for the award. I think I'll add a number to the picture. =D

  9. Loved the Dickinson poem. It goes along with some thoughts I've been having. Great to get to know you better.

  10. Awesome! Thank you! :) Too cool. And oh - Tower of Terror - absolute worst! When I went on there I had on one of those pouch lanyards, I tucked it down my shirt so it wouldn't fly up - didn't work. I'm totally freaking out and this thing flies up and hits me right in the face - twice! I had a h.s. math teacher you would have LOVED. He used to go around singing under his breath all the time, until one day he was singing Rocket Man and 2 of the guys from class joined in. They did it in 3-part harmony and it was shockingly good! It was like being in the twilight zone - wild!
    Thank you again!

  11. I always thought Emily Dickinson's writing was so rich and dark, it made me want to cry. I had a teacher once tell me my writing reminded him of hers. I took it as a compliment.

How on Earth did you break your tailbone twice?

Ditto on Harry Potter and dark chocolate, although I wasn't too happy with the last book.

As long as I'm strapped down I don't mind falling. There's something awesome about a roller coaster. Once you're falling, you're screaming, and there's no room for anything else. It's freedom.

  12. Holy Toledo! 12,878 posts! I think I topped out at about 4,500 on my busiest board. I wasn't a mod, though.

  15. I'm going to update my business cards:

    James Duckett
The writer, not the guy on death row. Or the Saint for that matter.

I know, you've got to go through about three pages of James Ducketts before getting to me. I should probably correct that sometime.

  16. Renae - isn't that poem lovely? As soon as Sarah posted it, I need it'd be one of my selections.

Amber - that's too funny! Made me think of the time the fam was playing Wallyball and my volatile son threw a fit. When he slammed the ball on the ground, it bounced back up and hit him in the jaw.

Ev - yeah, well a lot of those are mod related posted reporting what action I've taken and conversing with other mods in the Mod Suite or Back Room.

Tamara - that's when I first saw it, too. Seriously jealous.

Tara - triple delicious. Unbelievable. =D

James - so sorry. But when I googled you to find you webpage since my dang dashboard wasn't being cooperative and I'm following a lot of blog, that one came up. O_o It's kinda funny. Kinda.

  17. Donna:

Congrats on the award! You definately deserve it. And sorry, I'll never grow tired of reading more fun facts about you. I'm here for the duration.

    P.S. Loved the poem.

  18. Congrats on your award.

I want to be in the middle of somewhere when they do a flash mob like that too!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Congrats on the award. I love the Hallelujah flash mob. My choir was going to sing that one year and decided against it because we knew we'd never do it justice. The choir in that video was amazing.

It's funny, I love that sensation of falling, so you'd think roller coasters are perfect for me. But every year I get more and more afraid of them. I'm afraid eventually I won't be able to ride them at all :(

    ReplyDelete
  20. Congratulations on the award. I'm with you on the whole height thing. I don't do fairgrounds rides. Nooooo.

  21. Congrats on the award! And thank you so much for thinking of me (and loving my background ;)
I totally would have been by earlier but I was gone over the weekend and have been playing catch up one email at a time. Anyway, just wanted to say Thank You!

  22. I too hate the Tower of Terror. When we went last year, my five year old had to hold my hand. He laughed at me when we were in line.

  23. Thank you for reading my post about Thor :)

  24. Bryce - you're too kind.

Kimberly - seriously! I live in a community with a university with 30,000 students and the next city over has a private university of the same size. Surely SOMEONE's thought about doing something like this!

    Ellie - I have a son who won't do height. I just won't do falling. =D

Candace - my pleasure. Hope you had fun.

Becky - that makes me smile. But you're braver than me. You went on it.

Stephenie - you're awesome. I tweeted about it too.

  25. No problem, you aren't the first to notice that. Side note: No relation.
