Blogging Challenge W(ordsmith)

I love wordsmith.org. A long time ago I signed up for their email list, and Monday through Friday I get a fun email about words, their history, useage, and even a link telling you how to pronounce it. Today's word is "shirty." It means bad tempered or irritable.

I'm afeared if people said it quickly too many times in a row it might get them into trouble in polite company.

Besides the fun books you read, are there any good sites you go to that broaden your vocabulary?

  1. I like the blog "Missed Periods and Other Grammar Scares" because she tackles grammar in a very funny way:

    "Shirty" could be easily misheard.

  3. Shirty is a fun word. :D You're right, though--might have some trouble if you don't enunciate. ;)

  4. The enunciation could pose a problem on that word. Uh-huh.

I'll check out that site and Theresa's too. I love stuff like that. :-)

  5. I get that wordsmith email every day. I love it. I like to explore dictionary.com and their thesaurus when I'm feeling stuck on a word. It reminds me of words I forgot all about.

  6. I'd love to say yes, but... no. Yours sounds like a good start, though!

  7. I thought the word looked very easy to alter and still get a similar meaning. :) I like to follow people who share vocabulary and grammar tips on Twitter.

  9. Donna, thanks for the hug!

A resource for me is my budding author son. He seems to know quite a few words I never even knew existed. This son just turned 27.

  16. I'll have to check out Wordsmith, I love looking up words, and it's surprising how many of them are hard to track down in the current Websters these days!

  17. Not really, no. There aren't many sites that I go to strictly with the purpose of broadening my vocabulary. I try to stick with books for that but am glad when I come across websites that teach me about new words.

I may have checked out wordsmith before but am not sure, so I'm going to visit that site to figure out what it's all about.
