Getting Older & a Quote

My father-in-law is ninety-four and a veteran of WWII. He joined the Navy when he was sixteen to fight. He's actually my first husband's father, but I remained close to him and his wife after the death of their son. Except for my kids and us, we're all the family he has, so he's living with us now.

Poor guy. He moved to California decades ago to get away from the cold of Michigan. He hates the cold, and it's an even bigger deal for him as he's aged.

We live in the Rocky Mountains. Winters here make him really cranky. Because of the cold. But my hubby's doctor told us we had to move somewhere with a hard freeze for my husband's health (his allergist said he's allergic to everything he breathes and half of what he eats).

*sigh* We can't win.

Today's quote fits pretty well. It nearly froze the other day, and by Sunday it'll be in the 80s. lol

  2. My mom is from Michigan but came to hate the cold too when she moved to Florida. She's had to move here when she needed more help. She's in assisted living now and just doesn't go out in the cold if she doesn't have to. It's not a great option, but one you may have to do if your father-in-law needs more help down the road.

    1. If he does need to move to one, he may choose California again. And we're 11 hours away. ugh

  3. Being warm would be nice, but being able to breathe is even better.

    2. Mark Twain was right! It's hard to need to polar opposites, but I get it.

  4. I've lived in central New York for nearly twenty years now. There's a lot to love about it but I can tell you, each winter is less tolerable than the last. I can certainly understand how your father-in-law feels.

    1. I do too, though it doesn't change hubby's challenges. Anywhere that meets his doctor's instruction my FIL wouldn't like. Thank heavens for long johns!

  5. How kind of you to take care of the old father in ex law! I love colder climate, so maybe I need doctors excuse for my allergies to move to Greenland?
