Since I inadvertently answered this month's question last month, I decided to ask myself something else.
What genre would you write if your current one disappeared tomorrow?
I read a lot of genres and prefer there's a romantic subplot when it's not a romance (mine usually have adventure, mystery, or suspense). But I've also written a Victorian time-travel series (utilizing fae magic but downplaying the magic). I've also written a YA/NA portal fantasy that has magic. I've also begun what will be a midlife women's fiction fantasy trilogy. Oh, and I've got over 50k words in a scifi that I may someday finish.
But I've been reading a lot of urban fantasy lately and loving it. I think it would be a hoot to write in that genre.
How about you? What genre(s) would you like to try out?

Fantasy is always a cool genre. I read a lot of it but I've never attempted to write it.
ReplyDeleteIt's kind of funny because I used to be a bit of a SciFi snob. I looked down on fantasy. Then a kid named Harry changed that. lol
DeleteFantasies are very popular. The time-travel idea sounds very interesting too.
ReplyDeleteThe time travel was so fun to write--and to research!
DeleteI write urban fantasy but would love to try a mystery.
ReplyDeleteSo much potential in a mystery. The urban fantasies I've been reading have a mystery element.
DeleteThis is a fun question replacement! I'm looking at swinging over into mystery. So far, I've just done it in short stories, but those have been successful, so I want to write an amateur sleuth series. (I usually write horror, though I also write urban fantasy--which was already a switch from horror--nonfiction, SF, memoir, and fantasy. I love to explore writing.
ReplyDeleteI'm working on a short cozy right now. It can be as bad as romance with expectations. lol
DeleteWomen's fiction fantasy . . now that sounds an awesome adventure. So cool to try something new, never know what will happen.
ReplyDeleteRight?
DeleteIs it more difficult to write fantasy, given that you often have to research science and it requires more logic in the plot? Did not know there is such a genre as middleaged women fantasy LOL what does it involve? Hopefully not romance with mutants and shapeshifters and aliens and such crazy things like in some nasty genres...
ReplyDeleteFantasy is actually a little easier because it's made up. lol The challenge comes in creating the magic system and the world and trying to think it through so you're consistent with the rules you've established.
DeleteIn my midlife series, there are magical creatures like unicorns and latent magic that comes out when something happens to the people (don't want to spoil it :D). So no one is experienced with it and must find their way. It's been fun to write something totally different. And a stretch!
