Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!
Beth Camp, Crystal Collier, and Cathrina Constantine!!
Actually, I have a couple of projects that fit this category. One is my first book. I was just messing around to see if I could write a full-length novel, so I put in all the things I love (or enjoy reading about): cruising, romance, action/adventure (via shipwreck), self-discovery after a tragedy. And I eventually sold it to a publisher.
The second one is a love project. It's a portal fantasy with doppelgangers that has two storylines running through it, one set in a dimension that has magic and the other is set in Hawaii where the characters were inspired by my grandkids. My oldest granddaughter gave me input on the female main characters.
That one has been published but my readers (who struggle even with my time travel series) don't know what to do with it. Fantasy is just beyond most of them. But my granddaughter said "She ended up with the wrong guy," so I have drafted a second book. My goal is to figure out how to fix the second plotline in that one and publish it too. I have a different penname for that series.
Sorry readers didn't connect with the time travel aspect.
ReplyDeleteThe time travel has done well. Just not with my newsletter peeps. lol
DeleteBoth of those sound fascinating! You know, sometimes we write just for us, and that's okay. I've got a couple pieces hidden away that wouldn't fit nicely in any niche, so maybe they'll see the light of day, and maybe not.
ReplyDeleteAs long as they give you pleasure in the writing...
DeleteI enjoy time travel and fantasy, which is my fave. Your quote is Perfect!!!
ReplyDeleteThat makes me happy!
DeleteI really like time travel. I think most of us have a sweet spot for the first story we wrote.
ReplyDeleteRight? There's a reason we wrote it. :)
DeleteLove your Thought for the Week, Donna! Both of your books sound awesome! Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Fundy!
DeleteWhy do you use different pennames for different genres?
ReplyDeleteDezzie, it's a way to let readers know they're getting something different. Many authors who write both clean and steamy romance let authors know by the penname. So, if a reader doesn't want to peek behind closed doors, they can tell.
DeleteAuthor Elizabeth Peters who was famous for her Victorian Egyptologist mystery heroine wrote contemporary thrillers under the penname Barbara Michaels.
So, I have the penname Rae Kinsley for my portal fantasy. I'll also publish my midlife women's fiction fantasy series under it, and I even have hopes to write a scifi series under it.
