Monday Meanderings - September 5th

First Meandering ...

As I write this I'm looking out the window at the cloudy sky. The weather's cooler this weekend than it has been in months. It's rather nice. It's Labor Day here in the States. We tend to forget the fight that workers in the past have done that we benefit from. So, I give you this awesome scene from Newsies.

Second Meandering ...

I got prep work and other technical stuff out of the way and am finally into edits for Swing Vote, Safe Harbors #3. I wrote the first draft nearly two years ago. It's crazy. 2017 will be the year it sees life. I'm really excited about this story.

Excerpt
Marc winced as he pulled into a stall in front of the gas station convenience store. With a groan, he dragged himself from the jeep. Using the vehicle for support, he arched his left foot and stretched the damaged muscles in his left calf. They cramped.

He sucked in air at the too-familiar pain and steadied his breathing. Once the spasms had calmed a little, he began the slow series of stretching exercises his physical therapist had given him.

“Just keep on moving until you’re gone,” a male voice said from behind, the sound rough with years.
Marc tried to turn, but his stupid leg cramped again. He lost his balance and stumbled against the door.

“Drunk—or high. Fool kids. A waste of space.”

“I beg your pardon?” Marc finally looked at the old man and tried not to be offended at the remark. No point in ticking off the locals.

“We don’t want ya. We don’t need ya. Go back where ya come from.” The old man spit some disgusting dark liquid out the side of his mouth before stomping inside the convenience store.

Third Meandering ...

There's progress on the house, but it's not something I can post pictures of. They installed the basement plumbing and next week they should pour that foundation and do some backfilling of dirt around the outside (which they dug wider than needed to give them room to work). After that they start framing the house itself. Then I'll have pictures.

Something I have planned for my basement stairs ...

Click her to see where you can buy these.
What I have to do is figure out if I want to buy them (like in the picture) or paint them myself. I do have artist kids, after all. And I have to decide which books to include.

What books would you have on your stairs?

  1. Hope you're having a good holiday! It's a great feeling when a longstanding project gets to see the light of day. I definitely want some stairs like that. I think doing it yourself would be the way to go - then it can be as personal as you like and it'll be a great project for the kids.

  2. I'd have to buy, no way could I do that with my art skills. Sure be neat to have though. Awesome when a project can see the light at the end of the tunnel indeed. Can't go wrong with Newsies.

  4. where can we order that swinging blond hunk :)
So many kids today are a waste of space....
Methinks you can order in some of the shops to print you stickers like that for your stairs.

    1. Yeah, about the stickers. That's what I have to decide. I imagine I can totally personalize them if I choose to go that route.

  5. Love the stairs! Weather turned here a bit with the first of September, cooler, drier, and it seems to have kicked up something in my allergies, which is the one downside.

  6. Oh, my goodness...Newsies. So I saw this on Broadway and it was great...but as a result my wife loves it now, and my kids love it, and they sing this song to me all the time. I think I'm getting too much of a good thing now;)

    1. You poor thing. At least it's a great song to have to listen to over and over and over again. :D

  7. Oooh, stairs! I think I'd like to have my own books on my stairs, so I'll probably have to paint them myself. Sort of a way of reminding myself of progress. Or, you know... flaunting hubris and inviting the wrath of the gods.
