Monday Meandering - Leap Day 2016

First and only Meandering ...

I'm trying to choose names for a project I'm plotting and plan to write the first draft of in April for Camp NaNo. Do you ever find yourself with a perfectly good name but you associate it with someone that ruins it for you? This site has some fun names from the Victorian era, but ...

VICTORIAN NAME                    MY ASSOCIATION
Archie                                            Bunker

Bernard                      from The Santa Clause

Bert                                   and Ernie

Clarence                              the Cross-Eye Lion

Warren                             Jeffs
Yeah, so only a bad guy would be named Warren in any of my books ...

See what I mean?

What are some of your name associations?

  1. Luke is a good Bible name but it will always be Luke Skywalker to me...

    1. Haha I go back ever farther than Star Wars. I remember an old TV show when I was a kid with a character named Luke.

  2. Now that I'm trying to think of names that have strict associations in my head, I can't come up with any!

    1. Lucky you. I didn't want to take my husband's last name at first when we married because I associated it with a psycho coworker. :D

    1. I've known enough Jacks that the name is more diluted for me. I do have a character I love named Jack in one of my books.

  5. Alfred... T. S. Eliot's Alfred Prufrock. Edgar I think of Edgar Winter. Minnie, of course I think of Minnie Mouse.

    1. I thought of Minnie too since that's also a historical name from the time period I've been looking at.

  6. So right. One character can simply own a name. For me, Bob can't be anything but a butthead.

  9. That was actually pretty funny. And, yes I have a terrible problem with that name association thing. sometimes I go so far as to judge people by their name, because is brings back an unpleasant memory of someone else with that name. YIKES!
