IWSG - Maybe

Click here to find out more and to see a list of other IWSG blogs.
Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

As I write this, I'm on my fourth chest cold (and ears and sinuses) since right after Christmas. Maybe the fact that I've felt like crap for two months is taking its toll on my outlook.

Maybe I'm running out of stories to tell.

Maybe not.

Maybe I'm sick and tired (of being sick and tired? haha) of the marketing part of being a published author. Definitely this part.

Maybe I am just looking back on the carefree days when I wrote for the sheer pleasure of it, when I had no delusions of publication.

Maybe I need to get another hobby.

Maybe. Maybe. Maybe.

Maybe I'll go finish those edits from my editor.

  1. Sometimes I feel like that as well. You're just drained. Especially after being sick. Don't give up.

    1. I toy with the idea of giving up sometimes and then I think about all the stories I need to finish.

  2. I suspect it's hard to run out of stories to tell, since so much of it is about the way you choose to tell them.

  4. Oh, I'm sorry you are feeling so lousy. You've obviously had a rough few months. Those colds can really wear you down. Take care and I hope you feel better soon.

    1. I went to the doctor yesterday concerned about being sick so many times in such a short time, and she said it's been a really bad year for everyone. If you haven't been sick (or sick much) count your blessings.

*sighs* This is precisely the reason writers have one another.

  6. Feel better soon....it's hard to be upbeat when you're sick. That said, once I finish writing (and maybe after the first draft), I want to chuck it all to someone else to clean up and publish/market. But I struggle through it...have to admit, I think I prefer being self-published over traditional. Not sure I could handle THAT side of marketing. LOL!

  7. Maybe I need to get another hobby...haha. I wish I could do that. I truly do. But maybe I should work on those edits from my agent. Ah, the life of a writer. Hang in there!

  11. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Donna. You are describing sheer exhaustion ~ I experienced it over and over as a teacher. I finally had to retire because I was afraid I would push my limits one time too many and die ~ seriously. I'm not a published author other than in a literary journal and some newspapers, so I'm still writing for the pleasure(????) of it. But my stories keep trying to pound their way out of my heart and into the world. Maybe you need to take a time out in the sun and have a good round the clock sleep! You'll regroup!

    1. It's funny because I went on an 18 day cruise to Hawaii. And got sick on board, along with a ton of other people.

Get well first, then decide. ;)

  15. 'Writing for the sheer pleasure of it'; seems to me that's a place many of us need to revisit. I'm on my way. Hang in there and take your vitamins.

    1. Thanks, Barb. I do take my vitamins. Just a bad year this year. Or I'm getting old. Or both.

  18. Sorry about the colds. To be honest, I don't think I've had a single cold all winter. Maybe that's because the cold weather up in Michigan has killed all the viruses.

  19. We've all felt that way. Trust me. Hopefully you feel better soon! Last winter, I got the stomach flu 3 times and twice in one month. It was awful.

    Hopefully better times are coming!

  20. I hope you're feeling better. I had a cold last month and this month, and it knocked me out. I did have negative thoughts throughout.

Our writing lives sure do change once we're published.
