But when I was an young teen a new television show came about. It was a space opera, kind of a Horatio Hornblower in space. And it had an alien who captured my heart. Halfway through the third season, they canceled the show.
This was before syndication. When a show was canceled, it was gone. It wasn't until I was in college that syndication came about and suddenly it was on TV again. Huge crowds of people would gather at the TV lounge on campus to watch it. Somebody in Hollywood must have cottoned on to the fact that there was still an audience.
They made a movie. A horrible movie. But it was a hit. All those fans who'd been starved for something new went to see it again and again and again. So they made another one. A good one. One that captured all the great things that made me love the series in the first place.
And then they killed off my favorite character!
It was like my uncle had died. I bawled. But they made another movie and (kind of) brought him back. And they kept making movies. And then a new series in that world but in the future. And then they made more spin off series and more movies.
And then they finally got brilliant and went back to the original show in 2009 and made a new movie.
It ROCKED! I loved what they did with it. I saw it in the theater six times and grinned all the way through. I wasn't sure at first if I would be able to see Zachary Quinto as anything but Sylar the psychopathic serial killer from HEROS, but he's done a fabulous job following Leonard Nimoy as Spock

Saying hello from the blog hop...I really enjoyed Zachary Quinto as Sylar- he's such a great actor. And I look forward to seeing him as Spock.
ReplyDeleteYes, the first movie was NOT GOOD!! Thank God they made another one. (How could you go wrong with Khan?) I was too young to remember when it was on the first time, but I've seen all the Star Trek shows and movies many times.

ReplyDeleteI can't even begin to think of my favorite alien. Probably the 'best' is the alien from Alien. Just a relentless killing machine.

For an alien who buries his emotions, Spock sure generates them in others. And yeah, being a major fan of Sylar, I worried about being able to picture Quinto as Spock, but he did an excellent job, a testament to his acting skill.

ReplyDeleteI love the J.J. Abrams films too. Can't wait for Into Darkness. That's cool trivia about the bangs. I always hear that Leonard Nimoy is just the coolest, nicest guy ever. Great pick! Spock never gets old. (Kinda literally :D) My Martian Post. Happy Monday!

ReplyDeleteYes, I liked the JJ Abrams Star Trek movie, and I'm looking forward to the next one. It hasn't caught on yet, but when other pundits were joking about "Star Trek 90210" because of the generally young and pretty cast, I thought of another one.
A nickname playing on JJ Abrams' first TV series, which was also a bit of a evening soap melodrama about young pretty people.
To me, it'll always be Star Trek-icity. ;)
I didn't know about the haircut. Thankfully manufacturing the sideburns was far easier to give Starfleet that uniform look (beyond the uniforms).

ReplyDeleteVery cool trivia about spock's hair! I watched the show in the 70s and really liked it, and I remember when Spock died . . .I didn't want to watch the next movie until I found out he had been brought back.

Oh, yeah, Spock is a no-brainer. Loved Star Trek when I was a kid. It was on television in reruns in the afternoon. My dad and I never missed it. :)
