Optional question:
April 1 question - If you have a playlist (or could put one together) that either gets you in the groove to write or fits with one of your books, what is it? What type of music or what songs?
I often like music that matches the characters. So, for example, while I'm not normally a metal fan (my sons are and taught me how broad a genre it really is), I would listen to Power Metal groups as I was writing a couple of characters in my Safe Harbors series. One of the characters doesn't survive the modern-day pirate attack on a cruise, so it's kind of bittersweet.
Or if I'm writing action, I like epic soundtrack music. Usually I prefer music without words when I'm drafting, but not always.
What about you?
Are you a "only in silence" writer?
Or do you have tunes that put you in the mood?

Cool your sons turned you on to metal! It is a very diverse genre.
ReplyDeleteIt totally is. I had no idea!
DeleteIt's interesting how you choose your music based on your character. I'm an "only in silence" writer.
ReplyDeleteWell, it sets my mood. That's for sure. If I don't want music, I often put on ambience videos on YouTube.
DeleteI hear you about the music without words. Lyrics get messy when you're trying to type words! But sometimes they work. I had that experience with non-normal genres too when I started writing a book that had a totally different feel and my husband introduced me to a song he felt fit the characters. He was right. And it became the book's anthem song.
ReplyDeleteI love that he guided you to a song that fit so well!
DeleteI'm an occasional lyric-free soundtrack listener to get into the emotion of the story, but mostly I use brown noise to keep me focused. (Link to it is on my blog.)
ReplyDeleteI get it. I use ambience videos quite a lot.
