I try to avoid negative stuff when writing reviews but some books are so bad that it would be a crime not to trash them and discourage the writer. It is noticeable, though, that over at GoodReads some write reviews simply to score hate likes.
I think Goodreads has an environment of hateful comments. What might be a better way to handle what we think is a terrible book is to contact the author directly and express positive suggestions on where they failed--and I'm not talking about personal opinions. What I hate others often love. And vice versa. Every writer has to begin somewhere, and hopefully we grow as we write more. But an ugly review lasts forever.
