Banned Books Week Giveaway Hop

Hard Cover
Anybody who knows me knows I'm a rabid Harry Potter fan. The books and films have been so wildly popular that some of you may have forgotten that there were (and still are) lots of people who would like to see them banned.

So no one should be surprised that the banned book I'm giving away for the Banned Books Week Giveaway Hop is one of Harry's books.

    And another ...

But to spice things up, I'm going to have a second winner. This winner will get a hard copy of another banned book. A Pulitzer Prize winning book.

Hard Cover

You only have to do two things for your name to be entered in the giveaway:
  1. Comment here that you're interested in participating in the drawing.
  2. Tell what your favorite banned book is and why.
I invite you to do the following but neither is required:
  1. Visit the other members of the Banned Book Giveaway Hop and see what books they're giving away. You can find the list here. The Giveaway lasts a week, so you don't have to hit them all at once.
  2. Feel free to follow me if you aren't already.

    1. Great post! There are a number of banned books that I've loved~ I just looked up a list to see which might be my favorite and was surprised to see Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya on it. I remember adoring that book. And guess what else was in it? Witches, by Roald Dahl! And I definitely love that one :)

    2. Not commenting for the giveaway, but just to say - good for you for highlighting this sad issue.

    3. Favorite banned book: The whole Vampire Academy Series. The last one was banned before it was even written.

    4. Please enter me in the drawing. I can't give you a specific banned book that I love because I don't keep track of what books are banned and what books are not. I just read what I want to read. But kudos for highlighting banned books, because a large number of them are high quality and deserve the attention!

    5. I'm not entering the giveaway, but this is still such a great idea. Banned books are often banned because they're too honest. Great post!

    6. My favorite banned book (which is really banned and not merely withheld from a school library or rejected from a school reading list) can get you a death penalty in some places in the world -- the Bible

    7. Thanks for the giveaway. I don't know what my fav book would be there are quite a few. I remember a teacher took a book from my brother once because she deemed it "inappropriate". My mother went to the school and raised a riot. She had given him the book and they could ..... LOL go momma!

    8. Have to say I"m always a bit shocked by some of the titles that show up on the banned book list. I'm not that easily offended, so it's hard for me to understand why certain books get that kind of attention.

    9. I'm always stunned when I look at banned books lists.

To Kill a Mockingbird is right up there for me. Also Fahrenheit 451, 1984, Of Mice and Men, and LOTR.

Love to be part of the drawing!

    10. Oh I promise I had mine in my head before I read Annette's post! But my list looks just like hers.

      To Kill a Mockingbird
      Of Mice and Men
      LOTR and Harry Potter
      Hunger Games

    11. Oh, read the instructions Shelly.

I would like to participate in the giveaway.

I'm going to pick Of Mice and Men. It was so touching the way that George looked after Lenny. And sometimes, life is sad, even for the innocent.

    12. Thanks for the reminder of Banned Book Week. I recently read through all seven HP books in record time. Can't believe I haven't read them until now.

    13. Cool giveaway and an all-too-often ignored issue.

The Diary of Anne Frank wins it for me, hands down. Not only did it beautifully capture the innocence of a young girl coming of age, but it managed to, in that same innocence, portray the monstrous atrocities of WWII. This book brought a world to its knees, and this reader very nearly to tears.

    14. Some of my favorite banned books are The Color Purple, Beloved, 1984, Brave New World, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Lord of the Rings.

    16. I'm not entering the draw, but two of my favorite banned books are SPEAK and TWENTY BOY SUMMER. I'm still scratching my head as to why some idiot wanted to ban them.

    17. Harry Potter is one of my very favorite banned books, too! For the LONGEST time, my kids had absolutely no interest in them being the books I read to them each night. After several years of trying to talk them into it, my perseverance paid off! And guess what? They are absolutely loving them too, just like I knew they would. :)

    20. Not entering the giveaway, but one banned book that's a favorite is The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The ending is sad (though I found an aspect to it hopeful), but he's an amazing writer.

    21. Ooo fun contest! Definitely interested in the giveaway. Aside of Harry Potter *sigh*, I'm gonna have to go with Catcher in the Rye. I just loved the tone and attitude in the story - made me laugh so hard at times.

    22. too many banned books to list; even if poorly written, all should be allowed to die on their own merits, not cuz some twit was 'offended' by it...

when i lived in british columbia, some books were banned because the parents in the kids' books were of the same sex, and for no other reason! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

    23. Cool giveaway! Wish I'd heard about it sooner, I would've loved to host this. I definitely want to be part of the contest at least. I like lots of banned books. Ones that I really liked reading were 1984 by George Orwell, Lysistrata, Howl by Allen Ginsberg (just saw the really well done documentarty-style bio film with James Franco as Ginsberg), The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. A lot of great books get banned. Here's one of my all-time faves for growing up: Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.

      Thanks for posting!

Harry Potter and the Twilight Series are definitely banned favorites of mine, but my all-time favorite "banned" book is Fahrenheit 451.

    35. Some of my favorite banned books were A Wrinkle in Time, The Giver, and Animal Farm. I think it is strange that people challenged those books. Especially the ones who challenged Animal Farm, or was it 1984, for being pro-communist, way to miss the boat guys.

My favorite is Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. I had to read it twice in school by requirement. Once in Middle and once in high school. I just really loved the story, and the relationship between George and Lenny. And it became my all time favorite book.
