IWSG - August 7th

OPTIONAL QUESTION: Has your writing ever taken you by surprise? For example, a positive and belated response to a submission you'd forgotten about or an ending you never saw coming?
I tend to be a discovery writer and do a minimal amount of plotting. I know generally know where the story's headed with a few scenes already in my head, but I don't always know how to get the characters from point A to point B. As a result, I'm often surprised as I'm writing.

On my first book, I knew I was approaching the conclusion, but I'd thought it would be a few paragraphs yet. Then I wrote something and knew that was it. It was the end, and I was done.

I was so surprised. lol

What about you? Have you had any happy surprises in your writing?

  1. Always nice to end sooner rather than later, right?

  2. I have a tendency to overwrite so in getting from A to B, I might use up the rest of the letters of the alphabet and then have to get rid of most of that in the editing process!

    1. For me, editing is when the real writing happens.

  3. I'm definitely a pantser so I plot pretty much the same way. Even if I do have an ending in mind, I don't always know how I'll get there. Right now I'm two chapters away from the end and I STILL don't really know everything that will happen.

  4. Discovery writer. I like that. I start with an outline, but as I go, I come up with new and hopefully better ideas.

  5. We plot in about the same way. I'm also having the experience of changes in my current manuscript.

  7. Sweet, sneaking up on your ending.

I think what has surprise me the most is how dark I can go. [scared emoji] :)
