Cover Reveal - "I, Spy" by Jordan McCollum

I, Spy by Jordan McCollum—Coming June 5, 2013!

About the Book

Canada is probably the last place you'd expect to find an American spy. But even idyllic Ottawa has its deadly secrets—and so does CIA operative Talia Reynolds. She can climb through ventilation shafts, blend in at the occasional diplomatic function, even scale buildings (small ones). But there’s one thing she can’t do: tell her aerospace engineer boyfriend Danny about her Top Secret occupation. It worked for a year, keeping Danny in the dark, keeping him away from danger, keeping her secrets. And then Talia finally catches a hot case: Fyodor Timofeyev. Russian. Aerospace executive. Possible spy? She can make this work, too—until Danny needs her at the same time her country does. And when Fyodor targets Danny? Suddenly her schedule isn't the only thing suffering. Now to save her secrets and her country, Talia must sacrifice the man she loves.

Advance praise

The edge-of-my-seat undercover operations kept me turning pages, and just when I thought the story would go one way, plot twists sent it down another path. Thrilling, adventurous, and romantic, this book has it all for an Alias fan.
Jami Gold, award-winning author
Jordan McCollum’s debut novel is a delightful combination of mystery, action, and romance. Talia’s CIA training and almost OCD caution feed her quirky humor while exposing her very human fears and insecurities. Add in her boyfriend Danny, and it's enough to twist your heart.
Donna K. Weaver, author of A Change of Plans
Clever, suspenseful, and charged with political intrigue and romance, I, Spy is the perfect combination for a fun and captivating read!
Michelle Davidson Argyle, author of Monarch

Fill the Cracks with Love

Today is the one-week anniversary of a terrible day for the people of Boston. Author Sarah Eden, in her post here, has issued a challenge for today. It comes from a comment her daughter made after the school shooting last December.

"When your heart breaks,
you choose what to fill the cracks with.
Love or hate.
But hate won't ever heal.
Only love can do that."

So I invite you to join Sarah today in looking for an opportunity to do a random act of kindness. It can be as simple as a word of encouragement.

Right now, we've got a lot of cracks to fill. I, for one, am going to fill mine with love.

"Fire and Earth" by Meredith Mansfield

Seventeen-year-old Casora has been raised to be a fearless warrior, commander of the faceless war band known as the Deathless. Nevertheless, she and her company are helpless to stop the invasion of their homeland. Without a country, the Deathless offer their services as mercenaries to the next land attacked by the same raiders who conquered their nation.

As the youngest prince and the one least likely to be of use in the war, Tiaran is about to be forced into a political marriage to a girl he hates. Rather than be used to secure the loyalty of an opportunistic general, he secretly goes off to fight in the war himself. His first battle is about to be his last when Casora rides in to rescue him.

When these two unlikely partners join forces on the battlefield, they'll shake the foundations of kingdoms.

I really enjoyed this book. Casora is a Deathless because of a curse, so she's already chasing her own demons all while frantic to find out about what happened to her family.

Poor Tiaran. There's so much more to him than his older brothers give him credit for--or even Casora, at first. She just thinks he's one more burden she must bear. Awesome and unexpected twist at the end.

Characterizations

I recently listened to Richelle Mead's newest contribution to her Vampire Academy breakout series, Bloodlines. This is the third book with Sydney and Adrian. Now, Adrian (a Moroi--good vampire who can do magic and doesn't burn up in the sun but is fatigued by too much exposure to it) is very different from human Sydney (an alchemist whose people help the Moroi but only because alchemists view them as evil and must be kept from humans).

One of the things that strikes me as I listen to these books (I'm a huge audiobook fan) is how well Mead handles the unique and often quirky personality differences between Sydney and Adrian. And I'm not just talking about the fun voice differences the reader provides.

Adrian is a recovering playboy. Kind of. lol He's funny and he's flirty and he's self-denigrating. Adrian's flawed and still finding his way as he grows up and learns to deal with his magic (which could eventually drive him insane--literally). Here are some examples of the kind of quips he comes up with:
“I know how devastated you must be to miss me, but leave a message, and I'll try to ease your agony.”
“Who is he?"
"An idiot," said Adrian. "Makes me look like an upstanding member of society.”
“You look confused," said Adrian.
I shook my head and sighed. "I think I'm just overthinking things."
He nodded solemnly. "That's why I try to never do it.”
The books are written in first person--from Sydney's point of view--so we don't get into Adrian's head. His comments do a great job of showing the reader what frame of mind he's in at the moment.

Mead has more flexibility with Sydney because of the first person writing, but I think this is where the author excels. The things that Sydney notices and thinks about are so "Sydney." She's brilliant, analytical, and totally a novice when it comes to feelings. Even her battle scene descriptions reflect how she views the world. She's a rule keeper and even her internal thoughts reflect that--if she's trying to break into someone's apartment and the ratty fire escape looks like it needs repair, she'll wonder why someone didn't report it, all while she's hanging two or three floors above the ground.

This is what we need to do with our characters. Make sure that we're capturing the uniqueness that is each one. Do you have any tips for doing that?

"Unbelievable" by Sherry Gammon

Deliah Lopez Dreser’s in town to take care of family business. They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, but there’s more to Lilah than meets the eye. Cole’s in danger of losing his heart when this firestorm throws sparks his way. However, is she simply playing him for the fool in order to exact revenge for her brother’s murders?

Maggie and Seth’s reaction when the truth is revealed pushes friendship to the limit. And this time around it won’t be a Dreser causing an uproar in Port Fare. It will be Cole's good friend Booker. But does Booker have it all wrong?  Usually not!

Author Bio
Unlovable was Sherry's debut novel and quickly rose to many top seller lists on Amazon. She is pleased to announce that Unlovable is currently being made into a movie. She has added three more novels to her body of work. Souls in Peril, the poignant story of Max Sanchez who is on a journey to help the struggling JD Miller survive high school, and Pete & Tink, a fun, light-hearted novella of a manga-loving geek and and five-and-a-half inch fairy. And UNBELIEVABLE, Book 2 in the Port Fare Series.

Giveaway! "Rising Book 2--Rebellion" by Laura Josephsen

I'm hosting a giveaway.
You can either get a ecopy of Rising 1 or,
if you've read that, Rising 2.
All you have to do is comment here
and indicate your desire for your name
to be put in the hat.
Winner announced on Friday.

Lachlan's had a rough summer. First, the girl he shares a painful history with didn't remember him. Then Brenna, the woman he loves, showed up after seven years away and wants nothing to do with him. To top it all off, he almost died with the rest of his people when soldiers invaded his country.

Now the enemy could be using Lachlan's people as assassins. When Brenna leaves to find the truth, Lachlan invites himself along.

As Lachlan struggles to rebuild the trust he lost with Brenna, they unravel the dark secret their enemy has worked long and hard to hide--and its consequences for them are greater than they could have known.

I'm nearly done with the book. I love Laura Josephsen's writing. She's got a gift for creating deeply troubled characters that you fall in love with and who twist your heart. This is a book that deals with hard themes like brainwashing, torture, and child abuse. But it also deals with recovery, hope, and redemption.
You can see my review of Rising 1 here.

Excerpt

The wind blew tendrils of hair that had escaped Brenna's braid into her face. She didn't look at him, but something in her voice caught his attention when she murmured, "Same old Lachlan. Always the dreamer."

Lachlan's gaze fell on her hands, clasping the top of the gunwale so tightly they were white. He reached over and laid his hand on one of hers. Her face tilted up toward his, and her kohl-lined eyes were as tired as they'd been the night he'd woken up in the Viarre encampment.

"It's good to have dreams," he said quietly. "They keep us going."

Brenna's hand remained tense under his and she shook her head slightly. "The only dream I have is taking down King Tristran and his government."

Personally, he saw that as more of a goal than a dream, but he didn't say that. "And after that?"

Brenna laughed harshly. "You're assuming we'll survive this. There have already been so many times we should have died." She pulled her hand out from under his. "Dreaming about anything else only leads to disappointment and heartbreak."

"My life's already been full of both. So has yours." Lachlan turned fully toward her. "Some things are worth the risk of more disappointment and heartbreak."

"How can you say that? What in your life could possibly lead you to believe that?"

"Tegan. Reynold. Adria and Bailey and Ivy. Derrek, Lorelei, Riordan, and Mairwyn." Lachlan leaned toward her. "You."

Brenna leaned in even closer to him and whispered, "Then you're going to be very, very disappointed."

"Because you think you'll end up dead? Or because you think you're not worth the risk of heartbreak and disappointment?"

Brenna's face tightened just a bit and he knew he'd hit on something. She drew back from him. "Forget it, Lachlan. You let go of me in the years I was gone; stop trying to hold on again." She strode toward the ladder that led below deck and scrambled down it.

Lachlan hurried after her. "Brenna, wait."

She ignored him and pushed through their cabin door. He stepped through before she could close it in his face and shut it behind him. The tiny cabin was sweltering, and Brenna yanked the blanket out from under her shirt and threw it on a mat in the corner.

"Brenna." He caught her wrist.

She twisted out of his grasp. "I said forget it."

"I can't." Lachlan spread his arms. "You're wrong, Brenna. I had to accept that you left. I had to accept that I couldn't find you and I had to move on with my life, but even then…even then, I couldn't let go of you."

"Well, you should have." Brenna's voice was low, carefully controlled, but she folded her arms across her chest.

"Brenna—"

"No! Just shut up! You still don't get it!"

"Then tell me! What don't I get? What?"

"Everything I touch breaks, Lachlan! It dies and bleeds and falls apart. I'm not like you. You grow things and make them come alive, and all I do is destroy anything that matters. I swore I wouldn't let it happen again, I swore I would stay away, and then I had no choice because of Ziphas's weapon. I was prepared for what I might find when I got to Alatia again. I was prepared for you to have settled down and started a family. I was prepared for you to never want to see or speak to me again. The only thing I wasn't prepared for was this." Brenna waved a hand at him. "You, still waiting for me!"

The story comes to a crashing end in this second and final book.

Book Bomb - Help Ben Wolverton

Ben Wolverton, age 16, was in a tragic long-boarding accident on Wednesday the 4th, 2013. He suffers from severe brain trauma, a cracked skull, broken pelvis and tail bone, burnt knees, bruised lungs, broken ear drums, road rash, pneumonia, and is currently in a coma. His family has no insurance.

Ben is the son of author David Farland, whose books have won multiple awards. Costs for Ben's treatment are expected to rise above $1,000,0000. To help raise money for Ben, there is a book bomb (focused on Nightingale and Million Dollar Outlines ) on behalf of Ben.

You can learn more about Ben's condition, or simply donate to the Wolverton family here

What is a Book Bomb?

A Book Bomb is an event where participants purchase a book on a specific day  to support the author, or, in this case, a young person in serious need: Ben Wolverton.

Since Dave's written so many books, which should I buy?

David Farland’s young adult fantasy thriller Nightingale has won SEVEN awards, including the Grand Prize at the Hollywood Book Festival--beating out ALL books in ALL categories. It is available as a hardcover ($24.99), ebook ($7.99), audio book ($24.99), and enhanced novel for the iPad ($9.99).

What is Nightingale about?

Some people sing at night to drive back the darkness. Others sing to summon it. . . .

Bron Jones was abandoned at birth. Thrown into foster care, he was rejected by one family after another, until he met Olivia, a gifted and devoted high-school teacher who recognized him for what he really was--what her people call a "nightingale."

But Bron isn't ready to learn the truth. There are secrets that have been hidden from mankind for hundreds of thousands of years, secrets that should remain hidden. Some things are too dangerous to know. Bron's secret may be the most dangerous of all.

I've read this book and really enjoyed it. You can see my review here.

What if you already own Nightingale or aren't interested in it?

If you are a writer, you may want to consider purchasing David Farland’s Million Dollar Outlines  It has been a bestseller on Amazon for over a month and is only $6.99.

As a bestselling author David Farland has taught dozens of writers who have gone on to staggering literary success, including such #1 New York Times Bestsellers as Brandon Mull (Fablehaven), Brandon Sanderson (Wheel of Time), James Dashner (The Maze Runner) and Stephenie Meyer (Twilight).

In Million Dollar Outlines, Dave teaches how to analyze an audience and outline a novel so that it can appeal to a wide readership, giving it the potential to become a bestseller. The secrets found in his unconventional approach will help you understand why so many of his authors go on to prominence.

What if you just want to donate?

You can donate money to Ben here:

You also have the option to purchase a book for someone else.

Want to help but don't have any money?

Spread the word about either the option to donate or about this book bomb. Share it on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, your blog—anywhere you can. Invite others to the event.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT BEN. WILL HE BE OKAY?

David Farland has been keeping everyone posted on Facebook. Subscribe or friend him to get up-to-date information. At the moment, Ben is stable and appears to be improving.

Cover Reveal--A Change of Plans

I've helped with a lot of cover reveals over the years.
This time, it's mine! *dances a jig*

Following is the trailer with music written and performed (in part) by my youngest son (he's on the guitar) with his band Kinslayer. When they were writing the music, I fell in love with it.

I'd love to have you add A Change of Plans to your Goodreads to-read list if you feel so inclined. It would totally make my day.

Insecure Writers Support Group

My name is Donna and I've been sober . . . .

Oops. Wrong group.

This is my first time participating with this group, though I've been reading other members' posts for years now. I've got two issues that are working on me right now.
Source: PowerPoint

1.    The first deals with some feedback from one CP on my current project. She raised an
issue that no one else (so far) has mentioned, but one I need to be concerned about.

It's that balancing point when a character has survived a traumatic, life-changing experience and is going through the depressed stage. It's before the character pulls himself up by his bootstraps.

How does one show the anguish and self-pity that can be incredibly poignant and powerful--and not have the character come across as a whiny, self-absorbed baby? Especially when that trigger point is going to be different for different people? I'm going to have to stew on this.

2.     My other stress comes TOMORROW with A Change of Plan's cover reveal! Squeee!

*shudders*

Stress! But ... I'm also going to show off my new book trailer--with music written by my youngest son and his band. So even if you hate the trailer, enjoy the music.

Have you ever written a character in the "depths of despair"? If so, how did you keep it from being maudlin?

Book Release - Without a Voice by Lauren Ritz

Don’t put yourself on the grid. No credit cards. New name, new city. Few friends, no family. Connections of any kind are a risk.

Five years ago Mae left Justin in Orlando. Never again will she cower, wondering who he'll hurt next. She's done letting him punish her.

Now she has real friends, people she cares about, a life worth living. After years of relative peace she's gotten complacent, relaxed her guard. Somehow, Justin has found her.

There’s nowhere you can go.

Mae can no longer cling to her safe obscurity if she's going to survive. Once she could have run and been certain Justin would leave those she loved alone. But he's changed. Justin is the whisper in the dark, a shadow on the street, the phantom no one sees.

You are mine. I will never stop.

Bio
Lauren Ritz began writing at the age of six with a “journal entry” about aliens flying through her bedroom window and landing on her wall. She tried to start earlier, but was handicapped by the fact that she couldn't draw well enough.

Writing is her love and her lifelong obsession, taking up the majority of her time when she isn’t involved in other less compelling interests. Gardening is her second love.
